Will iPhone 5s/5c change Apple fortunes in India?

For the first time in India, Apple is focusing on an agressive strategy to launch its iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c in the Indian market.

The company is doing simultaneous launch in ten cities- Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Pune, Anmedabad, Chandigarh and Ludhiana through its partner Redington and Ingram Micro. The company is also launching its iPhone through operators and has tied up with Bharti Airtel and Reliance Communications.

Reliance Communications will offer Apple iPhone 5s, the most forward-thinking Smartphone in the world, and the Apple iPhone 5c, the most colorful iphone. The iPhone  will be available in Reliance World stores from 2 November, 2013. Reliance Communications will offer iPhone 5c starting Rs 41,900 for a 16 GB version and iPhone 5s starting Rs 53,500 for a 16 GB version.

Having done well in FY 2012-13, the company is banking a lot on Diwali festive season to increase its India revenue. In FY 2012-13, Apple has grown its revenue by 417 percent to reach Rs 1,293 crore and one has to see how Apple performs on iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c. The revenue for FY 2013-14 will depend a lot on iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c sale in the Indian market.

In the last fiscal, the company was successful as it was the first to launch zero percent EMI scheme which was very successful. This year, RBI has discouraged bankers to provide zero percent EMI scheme to consumers. The scheme was replicated by Samsung and Nokia later. Now with the retail channel in place and its presence expanded, the company is planning to increase its presence in the Indian market.

The company has sold 33.8 million iPhones, a record for the September quarter, compared to 26.9 million in the year-ago quarter and it is expected that December quarter will see a record sales 50 million iPhones. One has to see of this how much India contributes as iPhone 5c is made for developing markets like China and India.

Worldwide, as per different reports, the company has done well on iPhone 5s but not too well on iPhone 5c but we believe in India both models will do well.
