MTS makes a big splash, launches 3GPLUS in 500+ cities

Today MTS announced the commerical rollout of 3GPLUS or Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) Rev B Phase II in 500+ cities across 9 circles.

The announcement is historic as the company has launched EV-DO Rev B Phase II in all the cities within two weeks of the company receiving its third spectrum carrier from the Department of Telecom (DoT).

With this rollout, MTS becomes the first operator in the country to provide ubiquitous 3GPLUS coverage across 9 circles i.e. Delhi, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kolktata, Uttar Pradesh (W) and West Bengal. MTS is credited to be the first telecom operator to have launched Rev B Phase II version in Jaipur, Rajasthan in September, 2011.

With this launch, the company plans to increase its non-voice revenue from 33 percent to 55 percent thereby improving on its data revenue.

To experience 3GPLUS, MTS has launched MBlaze Ultra dongle providing data speeds of up to 9.8 Mbps. The company has also launched MBlaze Ultra Wi-Fi Dongle and plans are to launch a range of smartphones in the range of Rs 6,000 to Rs 12,000 supporting EV-DO Rev B Phase II by the end of 2013.

The company has an advantage vis-a-vis 3G operators as it works under excellent average speed under real world conditions, superior in-building coverage as it works on 800 MHz and multiple carriers help in doubling the capacity for bursty applications.

Speaking about the launch, Dmitry Shukov, chief executive officer, MTS India said, “This announcement is yet another testament of our commitment to provide world class telecom services to our customers.”

MBlaze Ultra device has been priced at just Rs 1,299 for both prepaid and postpaid customers. The tariff plans are: 5 GB unlimited for Rs 798 (prepaid) and Rs 700 in (postpaid); 10 GB unlimited for Rs 999 (prepaid) and Rs 875 in (postpaid); 15 GB unlimited for Rs 1,298 (prepaid) and Rs 1,199 in (postpaid); and 20 GB unlimited for Rs 1,498 (prepaid) and Rs 1,399 in (postpaid). All these schemes are valid for a month.

Wi-Fi dongle will cost Rs 2,500 – Rs 3,000 and will further come down as the volume increases. The company is also promoting upgrade offer for Rs 750 with complete cash back. The company plans to sell 3GPLUS through 2,500+ distributors, 23,000+ retailers and 600+ high quality branded retail outlets.

Using MBlaze Ultra dongle, consumers can acceess MTS TV, games on demand, MTS iDivine and MTS entertainment. The data usage for MTS subscribers is presently 3.5 GB to 4GB and with 3GPLUS the focus is to increase it to new level.
