Oppo Sets Up Research Institute On 5G And AI

Smartphone maker OPPO has established a research institue in China to work around advanced 5G and artificial intelligence. Named OPPO Research Institute, the unit is headquartered in Shenzhen and aims to boost capabilities in technological innovation, focus on technology pre-research, innovate on user’s needs and be at the frontier of industry insights.

The institute was officially opened on March 29 and revealed its overall structure as well as future research directions. Tony Chen, OPPO CEO, Mac Zeng, OPPO senior VP, Liu Chang, President of the Institute and other executives attended and addressed the ceremony.

Tony Chen, OPPO CEO, said: “OPPO Research Institute is the new investment for our future beyond the existing R&D system. With its various affiliated research centers, and our flexible and dedicated research and cooperation with external partners, OPPO will further improve its innovation capabilities. We strive for taking the lead in the development and application of AI, 5G, and other technologies so that we can continue to offer the perfect products combining art and technology. Our goal is always to satisfy and surpass users’ needs.”

The institute has also announced a partnership with Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, establishing the OPPO-Stanford Collaboration Lab to explore Artificial Intelligence front end technologies and application. Aside from AI, the smartphone firm is cooperating on 5G with New York University, Beijing Technology University, Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, and China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) Standards Research Institute.

Based in Shenzhen, OPPO has created similar research centers in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Dongguan, Japan (Yokohama), and the US (Silicon Valley), which will produce research work in software, hardware, and mobile standards.

With technologies such as VOOC flash charge and AI smart photography, OPPO is now at the global forefront of fast charging, photography, and other core mobile technology. In the future, with “users’ needs” and “key technologies” as driving forces, OPPO Research Institute will help to further realize advanced innovation and transform small breakthroughs to profound new developments in mobile technology.

With smartphone models like the F7 and A83, OPPO is claiming to solving a major customer pain point: “photos that are not that realistic” by offering its A.I. Beauty Recognition Technology. It employs a cloud database from premium suppliers that have sufficient power to support diversified facial recognition in smart terminals. The AI can learn automatically once it has amassed enough imaging data. It can classify, recognize and beautify the portrait in three aspects: skin color and texture, gender, and age.

Furthermore, the AI captures more than 200 facial points when a photo is taken, and this allows it to refine features and compose the face contour with precision; making a face appear three-dimensional as if the photographer has shot from different angles and capture a 3D image of the face. Finally, the AI will intelligently optimize the scene to cleverly integrate the portrait and background as if the photo has been touched up by a professional.
