With Cheapest Smartphone, Jivi Mobiles to Kick the Fire Out of the Fox

jivi-mobiles-logoJivi Mobiles, the mobile handset arm of Magicon Impex, is claiming to introduce the cheapest smartphone in the country. The smartphones would be running on android platform. The company has sent out media invitation in this regard and is going to launch the smartphones on Thursday. The company has partnered with Amazon for its online distribution, which is a current phenomenon in the country.

In the media invitation Jivi Mobiles wanted to draw attention on just one thing – price. The company has portrayed the smartphone to be the cheapest android smartphone in the country. Of late, bringing out the ‘cheapest smartphone’ has become the sole differentiator for many an Indian handset makers. Spice mobiles, Intex, Celkon and many more are deeply into this race. And now, Jivi Mobiles, too, joined the league. In June Hyderabad based Celkon Mobile launched the lowest priced android smartphone Campus A35K for Rs 2,999, and that too with Android KitKat OS. It was dethroned from that position by Spice Mobiles few days back when it launched a smartphone priced at Rs 2,299. Interestingly Spice could not hold onto that crown for long as one more Indian company Intex launched a smartphone at Rs 1,999, which, so far has been the lowest priced smartphone in the Indian market.

But both the phones from Spice as well as Intex run on Firefox OS and not on android, which, currently, is the world’s most popular mobile operating system. But the new smartphone from Jivi Mobiles is on Android, most probably on 4.4 KitKat, and is expected to be priced around Rs 2,500.

It appears with the entry of Firefox in to India with such a low price tag, some of the Indian handset makers are gearing up to face the challenge and keep the browser company out of the race. Its, perhaps because, only Firefox OS other than Android, has and can come out with low-cost smartphones. The other operating systems such as iOS, BlackBerry and Windows are not in the race. Just a day back, Intex launched so far the lowest priced smartphone at Rs 2,699. And now Jivi Mobiles is all set to raise the bar, rather lower the bar, of the price war among the low-cost smartphone market.

Though much of the technical specifications of the yet-to-be-launched smartphone from Jivi Mobiles is not known, it is believed to be an 3.5 inch dual SIM capacitive touch screen device. It is expected to have 0.3 megapixel front camera and a 2 megapixel rear camera. It is also believed that it will have 1 GHz Mediatek processor with 512 MB RAM and 4 GB internal storage capacity.

So far, Jivi Mobiles claim to have more than 500 service centers, 25,000 retailers and 533 distributors.
