WhatsApp Limits Message Forward Option To 5 Contacts

World’s largest private messaging app WhatsApp has added a new feature to its message ‘Forward’ option. Starting today, it has limited message forward option to just 5 contacts as against multiple contacts in the past. Though the firm did not specify the reason, it can be understood to be step towards curbing spread of viral content – many of which are fake.

Besides limiting the forward to 5 chats, the messaging app also removed the quick forward button to the media messages like images and videos.

WhatsApp said limiting the message forward option has helped reducing the number of forwards globally and hence it is testing the same in India.

“Starting today, all users on the latest versions of WhatsApp can now forward to only five chats at once, which will help keep WhatsApp focused on private messaging with close contacts,” the company said in a statement.

The company said people in India send more messages, images and videos than all other country in the world.

“Today, we’re launching a test to limit forwarding that will apply to everyone using WhatsApp. In India – where people forward more messages, photos, and videos than any other country in the world – we’ll also test a lower limit of 5 chats at once and we’ll remove the quick forward button next to media messages,” the statement added.

In the past there have been lot of pressure on the messaging app to find ways to curb fake news and help curbing violence and other such menaces that result from such informations.

“We believe that these changes – which we’ll continue to evaluate – will help keep WhatsApp the way it was designed to be: a private messaging app. We are deeply committed to your safety and privacy which is why WhatsApp is end-to-end encrypted, and we’ll continue to improve our app with features like this one,” it said.
