Spectrum Auction Starts Today

Telecom-Spectrum-Auction-EndsThe much awaited spectrum auction, touted as the largest ever, commences from today and a total of 2300 MHz of spectrum (not band) is on for sale.

If all the airwaves are sold even at the base price, government is set to pocket Rs 5.6 lakh crore. However, this may not happen.

The spectrum bands that are on sale include 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz and 2500 MHz. India is auctioning the very coveted 700 MHz band for the first time.

Almost all the operators are expected to bid aggressively to grab their need of airwaves. Telenor, however, has opted not to participate in the spectrum auction.

Bands of 1800 MHz and 2300 MHz are expected to see higher demand compared to other bands as all operators would like to pocket more 4G airwaves to plug their data gaps, both in terms of capacity as well as coverage.

Only Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel have 4G spectrum in all 22 circles. The other two big operators, Vodafone and Idea Cellular, have 4G presence in 9 and 10 circles. These two operators would like to strengthen their 4G presence by buying relevant airwaves during the spectrum auction.
