DoT asks operators to pay spectrum price by Feb 27th

The DoT has asked the telecom operators who won in the recently concluded spectrum auction to make the payments by 27 February. If the payment is not received by the last date, DoT will forfeit earnest money deposited by the operators.

The government has directed the operators to make the part payment by that date. The minimum payment that the government would receive from the seven operators is Rs18,529 crore.  Though the total winning amount is more than Rs 61000 crore, this is the amount the operators have to pay if they opt for installment payment scheme.

Operators who have acquired spectrum in the 1800 MHz band have to make an upfront payment for the 33 per cent of the total spectrum acquired and have the option of paying for the remaining amount in 10 yearly installments after a two-year moratorium period. For the spectrum acquired in the 900 MHz band, the operators have the option of paying 25 per cent of the total bid price upfront and pay the rest of the amount in yearly installments.

The seven operators – Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India, Reliance Jio Infocomm, Reliance Communications, Idea Cellular, Aircel and Uninor- had won spectrum in the recently concluded airwave auction. The auction was held for 1800 MHz and 900 MHz band of spectrum and lasted for 10 days. The spectrum auction was started on 3 Februrary.
