Y C Deveshwar, Founder of ITC e-Choupal, Passes Away

Y C Deveshwar, the longest serving Chairman of ITC, passed away this morning after a brief illness. The noted industrialist was 72.

An ITC official confirmation is awaited. Sanjiv Puri is the current CEO and MD of the company.

In 2000 he founded ITC e-Choupal, an IT-led initiative where he tried to to link rural farmers and their produce to internet to improve their livelihoods. These c–choupals are one of India’s first IT driven success stories in agri-marketplace.

Besides being the Chairman of ITC for the longest period of time, he also served as Chairman and Managing Director of Air India between 1991 and 1994.

He also served as a Director on the Central Board of the Reserve Bank of India and as a member of the National Foundation for Corporate Governance.

He is an alumnus of the IIT, Delhi, and Harvard Business School.

Conferred the Padma Bhushan in 2011, he was also ranked as the 7th Best Performing CEO in the world by the Harvard Business Review.

Y C Deveshwar joined ITC in 1968 and subsequently became the company’s executive chairman in 1996. Later in 2017, he was moved to the role of non-executive chairman.
