Now, You Can Use WhatsApp On JioPhone

Reliance Jio has announced that users of JioPhone can now use the world’s most popular messaging app WhatsApp on JioPhone starting today. WhatsApp will be available on both JioPhone and JioPhone 2.

This was a much needed relief for millions of JioPhone users across the country. The company had announced in July that it would soon be bringing WhatsApp on JioPhone.

When the JioPhone was launched little over a year back, it was an instant hit among customers as the device was available virtually free and offered whole bunch of services at a very affordable price, say for Rs 49, it offered free voice and 1 GB data for a month.

While the phone was good from all aspects, it lacked integration of two very popular apps – Facebook and WhatsApp. Though the company had so far sold more than 25 million JioPhones, lack of WhatsApp on JioPhone was a primary roadblock of its anticipated growth.

Though Jio was aware of the issue, it was not easy to integrate two highly media-heavy apps on a phone that has just 512 MB RAM and 4GB internal storage. Also, the phone has got a small display area compared to traditional smartphones.

The app companies, both Facebook and WhatsApp, had never developed this applications for any other such devices anywhere in the world, but knowing Jio’s presence in the market and the potential customer base that this app can gather looking at the huge size of the Indian market, both the firms finally developed the respective apps for JioPhone.

“During this movement of connecting the unconnected, many partners came forward to strengthen the cause. One such partner who has really stood by us from the beginning is Facebook and its ecosystem. The result of
one such partnership is out for the world to see today. We will be providing WhatsApp, the most used chat application in the world, on all JioPhones starting today. Jio wants to thank the Facebook and WhatsApp team for making this happen,” said Aakash Ambani, Director at Reliance Jio.

WhatsApp built a new version of its private messaging app for JioPhone, running the Jio-KaiOS, to give people a simple, reliable, and secure way to communicate with friends and family. All the existing features of WhatsApp like sharing photos and videos, group chat, voice messaging etc are there in this new app.

“Millions of people across India can now use WhatsApp private messaging on the best-in-class JioPhone across India,” said Mr. Chris Daniels, Vice President, WhatsApp. “By designing this new app for KaiOS, we hope to expand the ability for people to communicate with anyone in India and around the world by offering the best messaging experience possible to JioPhone users.

JioPhone users can download the app from JioPhone AppStore.
