Mathew Oommen, Gopal Vittal Appointed To GSMA Board

Two of India’s leading telecom leaders – Gopal Vittal, MD and CEO of Airtel for India and South Asia, and Mathew Oommen, President of Reliance Jio, have been elected to the Board of GSMA for the 2019-2020 term.

Gopal will join 25 other distinguished leaders from across the world to provide strategic guidance and roadmap to the organisation, which represents more than 750 of the world’s mobile operators, the company said in a statement on Monday.

The GSMA also represents over 350 companies in the broader mobile ecosystem, including handset and device makers, software companies, equipment providers and internet companies, as well as organisations in adjacent industry sectors.

Commenting on the appointment Gopal Vittal said, “I feel privileged to have been given the opportunity to serve the world’s premier mobile association. I look forward to working with the GSMA Board members to put out the industry’s growth vision in an increasingly digitally integrated world.”

The GSMA Board has also elected Stéphane Richard, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Orange Group as Chair, and Chua Sock Koong, Group Chief Executive Officer of Singtel Group as Deputy Chair. The current Chair, Bharti Enterprises founder and Chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal will step down from the post at the end of 2018.

Mittal had also served as Board member of GSMA between 2005 and 2008.
