Nokia And Oppo Sign Patent License Agreement

Nokia Monday said it has signed a patent license agreement with Chinese smartphone maker Oppo. Under this agreement the Chinese smartphone maker will pay Nokia to use the latter’s technologies and solutions. This is a multi-year agreement.

The value of the deal, however, is not disclosed.

“OPPO is one of the leaders in the smartphone industry and we are pleased to welcome them as a Nokia licensee,” said Maria Varsellona, Nokia Chief Legal Officer and President of Nokia Technologies.

However, it is not known if Oppo is going to manufacture smartphones for Nokia. It is also not known if the patent license agreement is limited to just smartphones or other devices as well.

“This agreement further validates our global licensing program,” added Varsellona.

We have sought clarification from Nokia on the same and the response is awaited.

Update : Nokia has clarified that the patent license agreement does not mean Oppo would be manufacturing phones for Nokia as the Finnish company is under a 10-year license agreement with HMD Global for the same.

“This is a non-exclusive patent license agreement, and while the terms are confidential between the parties, I can say that it absolutely does not mean that OPPO will manufacture Nokia phones in future. That right is held by HMD Global Oy, under a 10 year exclusive license which began in 2016,” Nokia spokesperson said in a response to¬† TeleAnalysis queries.

“As a leading owner of essential patents for communications standards such as 2G, 3G and 4G, Nokia has more than 100 licensees, mostly in the mobile phone market, including companies such as Apple, Huawei, LG Electronics, Samsung, Xiaomi and now OPPO. Any company which is producing devices that work to those standards needs to take a license to our patents,” he further added.
