UNISOC Launches Chipsets That Could Bring Down Octacore Processor Based Smartphones Price To $100

Wait till August, and you could see smartphones based on octa core processors to cost as low as $100 or around Rs 6,600. Mobile chipset maker UNISOC Wednesday announced two new chipsets in the Indian market that aim at offering smartphones with premium features yet at affordable prices.

At present price of smartphones based on octa core processors starts from Rs 9000.

Smartphones based on these two chipsets – SC9832E and SC9863 – capable of offering artificial intelligence and machine learning related applications, could cost around $50 to $100, said Neeraj Sharma, joint MD of UNISOC India.

The company which recently rebranded as UNISOC from Spreadtrum choose India to launch these products as the firm finds the country strategically ‘most important’.

“India is the most important market for us and we are focused on helping the Indian market stay ahead of the technological curve,” said Adam Zeng, CEO UNISOC.

He said smartphones based on these newly launched chipsets would hit the market around August-September. Some of the brands that may launch smartphones using these chipsets include Samsung, Karbonn, Lava, Micromax and Intex.

Besides the smartphone makers, Jeng said his company is working closely with the Indian mobile operators including Reliance Jio, to bring affordable 4G VoLTE smartphones to Indian consumers.

“Our association with Jio started three years back and we co-designed its 4G LTE feature phone,” Jeng said. “We are in similar talks with other operators including Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular”.

Chipset Details

The newly-announced SC9863 is armed with 8x Cortex A55 processor with speed up to 1.6GHz, and is built for delivering an unparalleled high-end user experience. It features an LTE Cat7 modem supporting Dual SIM Dual Standby and 4G+4G, and provides camera support for 16MP at 30fps with a 3xCSI 4+4+2 Lane/4xCSI 4+2+2+2 Lane interface. It’s 16MP + 5MP dual image signal processors ensure clearer, more vivid, and sharper image capturing, be it for videos or single pictures, and also have 3D Face ID capability.

The other chipset, UNISOC SC9832E, comes equipped with a 1.4 GHz 4x Cortex A53 processor with a 667MHz eMMC 5.1/LPDDR3 memory controller. It provides camera support for 13MP at 30fps, along with 2xCSI 4+4 Lane/3x CSI 4+2+2 Lane interface, and boasts of a MaliT820 MP1 GPU capable of 680 MHz supported by OpenGL ES 3.0 and Vulkan 1.0 GPU API.

The SC9832E features a VoLTE Cat4 modem with Dual SIM Dual Standby capable of supporting 4G+4G or 4G+3G configurations, as well as Wi-Fi bgn/BT4.2/FM/GPS+Glonass.
