India’s Top 10 Telecom Equipment Club, Micromax, Karbonn Make Entry

indian-telecom-equipment-marketThe Indian telecom market, one of the fastest growing in the world, saw solid growth in the just concluded financial year 2013-14, despite varied challenges. A major chunk of the growth can be attributed to the phenomenal rise in the smartphone adoption by masses and the humongous growth in data consumption by Indians.

We, at TeleAnalysis, did a survey to find out how various telecom equipment players performed in the last fiscal year ended March 31, 2014. Though we tracked the entire equipment industry, here, we have presented a list of Top 10 Telecom Equipment companies in India basis their financial performance or revenue.  This survey brought out some startling revelations. In the first-ever survey by TeleAnalysis on Indian telecom equipment industry, we saw that, though the traditional telecom gear makers like Ericsson and Nokia Networks (earlier NSN) etc are conveniently featured in the ‘TeleAnalysis Top 10 Club’, the surprise entry was by the Indian handset players like Micromax and Karbonn to the overall telecom equipment category. Interestingly, there are four handset players in the Top 10 Club.

The ‘TeleAnalysis Top 10 Club‘ was led by Samsung with revenues of Rs 19,092 crore followed by Nokia with Rs 7,940 crore. Samsung continued its juggernaut in the Indian handset market despite of ‘not-so-impressive’ performance in first two quarters. Nokia, though made some inroads with its Lumia series, had  to struggle a lot to bring its neck out of the competition. Cisco and Ericsson took up 3rd and 4th place respectively with revenues of Rs 6,475 crore and Rs 5,764 crore.

The story now gets interesting. Indian handset maker Micromax who has been giving fierce competition to Samsung and other phone makers, grabbed the 5th position in the list displacing Nokia Networks. Micromax ended the fiscal year with revenues of Rs 5,513 crore as against Rs 5,197 crore by Nokia Networks, earlier called NSN.

Similarly, another Indian handset player Karbonn Mobiles surged ahead to grab the 8th position, keeping itself ahead of Alcatel-Lucent and ZTE. Karbonn Mobile’s FY13-14 revenue was Rs 4,038 crore where as Alcatel-Lucent is placed at 9th position with Rs 3,076 crore and ZTE at 10th position with Rs 2845 crore.
