Ringing Bells, Makers Of Freedom 251 Phone Summoned By Court

Ringing Bells, the makers of Freedom 251 phone, has recently been summoned by a Delhi court. A Delhi court has summoned the management of the firm, who claimed to bring the world’s cheapest smartphone, in a Rs two-crore cheque bounce case.

Aryan Infratech Pvt Ltd, a private firm, had filed a cheque bounce case against the company, Ringing Belss Pvt Ltd, its CEO Dharna Goel, Managing Director Mohit Goel, Directors Anmol Goel and Sumit Goel, and President Ashok Chaddha.

The Magistrate court in Delhi found there are enough evidences against the accused to proceed in the case as Ringing Bells and its management have failed to honour the Rs two crore cheque despite repeated notices served to them.

“There is sufficient material available on record to summon all the accused. Therefore, a prima facie case punishable under section 138 Negotiable Instrument Act… Issue summons to all the accused,” the court said, reports ET.

Ringing Bells, as per the complaint, had issued a cheque worth Rs 2 crore to Aryan Infrastructure but the cheque bounced because of ‘insufficient funds’. It was then sent a legal notice by the aggrieved party but Ringing Bells still failed to make any payment.

The next hearing of the case is on 28 April.

Ringing Bells, in February this year, had announced to launch world’s cheapest smartphone for Rs 251. Named Freedom 251, the Android 3G phone was to be home-delivered in the same month basis prior bookings. Thousands of customers booked the phone through online mode and made advanced payments but the phones never reached them. The whole scheme looked controversial with industry alleging it to be a ponzy scheme.

The company again announced, after a lot of bad media and close government-watch, that the Freedom 251 phones will be handed over on a cash-on-delivery mode, and Ringing Bells withdrew the earlier campaign of booking the phone through its website, and refunded the money of those customers who had earlier booked.
