CWC upgrades Panama network

Cable & Wireless Communications (CWC) has upgraded its mobile data network in Panama City and Colon as the first part of a $47.5 million programme to meet growing customer demand for data-based services.

CWC, which trades in Panama as Cable & Wireless Panama (CWP), launched high speed mobile data services in 2011. Usage of mobile data on its network increased by nearly 1,000 percent between 2011-2013.

The upgrade has increased network capacity in areas where there is high demand for mobile data, enabling CWP customers to upload and download mobile data up to 20 percent faster. That means customers can better stream video clips, play internet games and use mobile applications. It has also improved the experience customers will have making mobile voice calls.

Having completed the upgrade in Panama City and Colon, engineers are now rolling out the programme to the rest of the country. Estimates made earlier in 2013 suggested that only around 11 percent of people in Panama are using mobile data. Mobile data traffic in Latin America as a whole is forecasted to increase at a CAGR of 72 percent between 2012-2017.
