1. 73.8 million urban Internet users stream music on mobile phones

As per a recent report, around 97.4 million or 63% urban Internet users listen to music online. Of these, around 73 million or 75% people stream music on their mobile phones via a data connection. This is attributed to the increasing popularity of live music streaming.

2. Music apps saw an increase in usage by 188%

In one of their studies, Yahoo’s Flurry Analytics collected data from around 58,000 mobile applications across 147 million devices in the country. As per its analysis, the following three are the categories in which app growth was the highest:
1. Music, media, and entertainment apps
2. Business and finance apps
3. Utilities and productivity apps

Music, media, and entertainment apps grew at a year-on-year pace of 188%; business and finance apps had a year-on-year increase of 176% while utilities and productivity apps had a year-on-year increase of 99%. This increase was mainly attributed to the increase in phablet usage, which, at present, has a 61% market share in the country.

3. Heavy apps with music streaming have increased due to affordable data costs in 2017

As per the Mary Meeker’s Internet Trends 2017 report, the amount of music streaming has increased in India in the past one year. As per the report, Gaana, a music streaming app, saw a growth that was thrice as much as what it usually observed during the period from June 2016 to March 2017. This was due to affordable data costs as well as the free 4G Internet provided by Reliance Jio, a telecom operator who made an entry in the Indian telecom market during this time.

4. Music apps usage is increasing by over 26.2%

As per the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) Global Music Report 2017, music streaming is helping drive growth in developing music markets like India with an over 26.2% revenue growth. This revenue growth has been fueled by record companies who have invested not only in artists but also in the systems that support digital platforms. This has made way for the licensing of over 40 million tracks across hundreds of services. It is also expected that the contribution through digital channels is expected to grow by 16% to reach Rs 25.4 billion by 2021.

5. Bollywood is the most popular genre

Of all kind of music, as per a recent finding, Bollywood has remained the most popular genre in the country. The study also states that due to digitalization, regional niches are growing and forming a new trend. With subscription-based monetization still remaining a challenge, most players are looking to generate revenue via merchandizing, live events, and brand partnerships.
