R.I.P Roaming, Says Airtel, Sunil Mittal Appeals Global Telcos To Collaborate

In a significant move to hold its grounds and to offer a befitting reply to Reliance Jio’s free offer tactics, Airtel today announced a roaming free network for its customers across the nation. That means, Airtel customers do not have to pay any charges anywhere in the country to make or receive calls.

Earlier roaming rental was free but with this announcement the roaming charges that Airtel was asking from its customers for every incoming call is removed. There are no roaming charges on outgoing calls as well. One just have to pay one’s regular call charges as like any local or STD call. The company would not be asking for any premium charges on outgoing calls. Roaming charges have also been removed from SMS.

But the most lucrative of all is the removal of roaming charges from data as well. Means, anywhere in the country, if you are on airtel network you do not have to pay any extra charges for using data. It will be charged just like the data network in your local circle.

That’s not all, there’s more to this story.

Bharti airtel has also simplified the international roaming scene.  Next time you travel abroad you do not have to check for various calling or international packs. What Airtel basically done is it created slabs basis one’s mobile expenses per day. If someone crosses that limit, the customers are automatically become eligible for a certain roaming pack. These roaming packs offer free incoming and outgoing calls, free SMS and some other benefits.

So, Airtel believes its customers will no more be getting bill shocks from their travel abroad.

Gopal Vittal, MD & CEO (India & South Asia), Bharti Airtel said, “This marks the death of national roaming and the whole country will now be like a local network for our customers, who will not have to think twice before making or receiving calls or using data while traveling outside their home base. Airtel has again set the benchmark in delivering best in class value backed by a great network experience.”

No bill shocks on International Roaming

For example, when a customer traveling to the USA without a pack hits the threshold of Rs 649 (the price of the one day pack for USA), he/she will automatically move to the one day pack with free incoming calls/SMS, 100 India and local country outgoing minutes, 300 MB data and a host of other benefits. Similarly, a customer traveling to Singapore will move to the one day pack the moment his/her usage hits the Rs 499 mark.

Bharti Airtel Chairman Sunil bharti Mittal has also appealed his global counterparts as well as telcos in India to collaborate on the international roaming issue so that customers get a seamless and affordable experience.

“At Airtel, we are changing the international roaming paradigm, which will allow our customers to take their number to every corner of the world. As an industry, operators across the world must collaborate to remove the cost barrier to roaming and offer customers the convenience of staying connected without the fear of exorbitant bill charges,” said Sunil Bharti Mittal at MWC 2017 in Barcelona.
