Airtel Now Offers Aadhaar Based e-KYC Service In 20,000 Stores

e-kyc-airtel-vodafoneAirtel Sunday said it’s now offering Adhaar based e-KYC (know your customer) verifications solutions in 20,000 outlets where the customers can get their credentials verified with the government using their Aadhaar number. The Aadhaar based e-KYC allows users to get their details like identity proof, address proof etc registered with the service provider without submitting any paper documents in that regard.

These 20,000 outlets will soon be expanded to 5,00,000 stores within few months where the customers who want a new prepaid or post paid connection can digitally verify their credentials, Airtel said in a statement.

In the middle of last month Indian government had asked all telecom operators to start using Aadhaar number as a basis of user identification and Airtel started rolling out the solution on 22 August.

Under the Aadhaar based instant verification process, customers purchasing a new Airtel prepaid/postpaid mobile connection need to submit/verify their Biometrics (iris scan / fingerprints) at the Point of Sale. The details will be instantly matched with the UIDAI database and following the validation, the connection will be activated instantly in the name of the customer. The process is fully secure and the retailer/representative at the point of sale will also be registered under Aadhaar.

According to the telco the initiative has received positive response from customers as it enables instant activation of Airtel mobile SIMs, thereby enhancing customer convenience and in-store experience. The digital verification, which is fully secure, also eliminates paperwork and benefits the environment.

At present, Airtel said, average of 50,000 customers getting themselves registered through this Aadhaar based e-KYC process on a daily basis.

“The Company expects the number of customers getting digitally on-boarded using Aadhaar based e-KYC to grow multifold as it ramps up the rollout of devices,” the company said in a statement.

Mr. Ajai Puri, Director – Operations (India & South Asia), Bharti Airtel, “Aadhaar based e-KYC has significantly enhanced the customer experience by enabling faster and paperless onboarding process and we have received very positive response from the customers and channel partners. We plan to deploy this solution in majority of our general trade stores, including those in rural pockets. We believe, this initiative is a great case study for Government’s Digital India vision.”
