There’s a good news for those who were fretting over linking their Aadhaar number with their bank or mobile numbers. The deadline that was earlier set to 31 March has been put on hold. Country’s apex court on Tuesday extended the deadline for indefinite period, or, till a new date has been decided. This comes as a major relief for those who have not yet linked their Aadhaar number.
A five judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice of India Deepak Misra pronounced the ruling saying mandatory linking with mobile phones and bank accounts will stand extended till the final judgement. A judgement in this regard is unlikely in this month.
The government had earlier told the Supreme Court that it may extend the deadline. The deadline to link Aadhaar with PAN was extended to March 31 in November last year.
The court’s order however is not applicable to the deadline for subsidies and benefits under Section 7 of the Aadhaar act. At present the deadline for mandatory linking of Aadhaar to avail these benefits is March 31. The benefits include 135 schemes of 35 ministries including subsidy on LPG, kerosene and fertilizers as well as on public distributed system (PDS).
