90% of Indian internet users access web by mobile devices

mobile-internetuserbase-indiaAlmost 90% of all internet users in India access the web from their mobile devices. The mobile devices include mobile phones as well as tablets. The country has a total internet user base of 210.38 million at the end of September 2013, of which subscribers who access internet through mobile devices reached at 188.20 million. It contributes 89.45% of the total internet user base in the country.

A recent TRAI data revealed that for the period in review, the total narrowband subscriber base reached 6.84 million whereas broadband user base reached 15.35 million.

Number of internet subscribers (except internet access by mobile devices) increased from 21.89 million at the end of Jun -13 to 22.19 million at the end of Sep -13, registering a quarterly growth rate of 1.38%.

Number of Broadband subscribers increased from 15.20 million at the end of Jun-13 to 15.35 million at the end of Sep-13, registering a quarterly growth of 0.99 % and Y-O-Y growth of 4.52%.

It’s a sad state of affairs in the country that the number of broadband subscribers has been hovering around 15 million for the last one year. It would be interesting to note that the country has set a target of achieving 175 million broadband users by 2017 and a staggering 600 million by 2020.

Number of Narrow band subscribers (except internet access by mobile devices) increased from 6.69 million at the end of Jun -13 to 6.84 million at the end of Sep -13, registering a quarterly growth of 2.25%.
