JioPhone Becomes India’s No.1 Feature Phone, Comes With 1 GB Daily Data Offer At Rs 49

Gone are the days of Lava, Karbonn, Micromax or, even Samsung to claim authority in Indian mass market mobile phone business. Reliance Jio, the newest entrant to Indian telecom space is currently the No.1 brand in feature phones segment. The company’s JioPhone claims the top spot in the feature phone segment in Q4.

According to a latest report from Counterpoint Research,in terms of feature phones, at the end of Q4, Reliance Jio’s JioPhone captured a market share of 26% and is placed at the No.1 spot. Samsung is at No.2 with 15% market share while Micromax, Itel and Nokia are with 9%, 7% and 6% respectively.

Overall India mobile phones market for the year 2017 crossed 300 million, a first for the country, with smartphones contributing to 44% to it.

The research organization said India’s overall mobile phone shipments grew 37% and smartphone shipments grew 12% with feature phones growing an astonishing 55% during 4Q 2017. Despite India’s seasonal peak normally being pre-Diwali shipments in the third quarter, the market set a volume shipment record in the fourth quarter for the first time.

In terms of smartphones, Xiaomi has dethroned Samsung to claim the No.1 spot. At the end of Q4 2017, the Chinese smartphone maker commands a market share of 25% whereas Samsung, which has been enjoying the top spot since Nokia left India 5 years back, has been pushed back to the No 2 spot with 23%. The other smartphone makers that found a place in top 5 are Lenovo, Vivo and Oppo, with all grabbing a market share of 6% each.

In a separate development Reliance Jio today announced a new tariff plan exclusively for its JioPhone users who make the brand today India’s No.1 feature phone seller. As per the new tariff plan, JioPhone users can get 1 GB 4G data per day for a period of 28 days with a recharge of Rs 49.

The company said this offer is the company’s Republic Day  gift for the over 500 crore Indians who do not have a smartphone yet. As the JioPhone is breaking the price as well as technology barrier with its smartphone counterparts, Jio wishes to offer 4G data at the cheapest rate and the phone at an ‘effectively’ zero price.
