Huawei Mate 20 Pro Review : Worth The Hype

Huawei has just launched its newest phone in the Mate flagship line – the Mate 20 Pro. Just one glance at the device and one can be sure of that in the recent times Huawei  has been paying good amount of attention to its design language, and trying to make these devices truly look unique. With curved glass all around, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro feels nice in hand. They have also included new texture that they call Hyper Optical line pattern to make it less slippery.  The smartphone is powered by Huawei’s highest performing SoC to date the Kirin 980. The Matrix Camera array on the back of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro features a four-point design with the three cameras and sensor encircled in a polished metal frame, gives it a both bold and distinct look. The flagship series comes in a new Emerald Green color.

Design elements:

The new Huawei Mate 20 Pro is extremely premium looking device which has a very iconic look, thanks to its back camera system which make this flagship device from Huawei look so different from  any other phones available now. The curved display of Mate 20 Pro really made the handset more gorgeous and made it look and feel like a top flagship in town. This also sets it apart from its predecessors and this is the first device from Huawei which has a curved display. They managed to create a 6.39 inch curved display which is smaller than the Galaxy Note 9, so it is more comfortable on your hand. It has a Hyper optical pattern and a eight edge curved design which makes it absolutely awesome. Another big thing that you will notice in the new flagship is the fingerprint sensor, it’s gone…no we mean its physical button, all you get now is an in-display fingerprint sensor.

Another big thing in the Huawei Mate 20 Pro design element is its speaker setup, you won’t notice any speaker grill at the bottom, as Huawei basically using the bottom of the device as a chamber and push the sound out from its USB Type C port.

The side profile of this phone is little different. On the right side of this device you will notice the volume rocker button and the power button is in a different colour, which looks cool for me, gives it a little bit of style in the design element. Down at the bottom you will find a USB C which can be used for charging the device as well as a port for using the headphone. A microphone is also built into this port. On the top you will find an IR blaster that can be used with the included app to control TVs, ACs or any other thing that has an IR receiver basically.

This phone is IP68 rated making it dust and water resistant. Huawei claims the device can sustain itself upto 2 meters of water for 30 min.

From its predecessor P20 Pro which has an AMOLED display, Huawei used a QHD+ display in the Mate 20 Pro. The pixels are crystal sharp with 1440 x 3120 pixels screen resolution with an amazing 538 ppi density. The viewing experience in this device is fabulous, display produce vibrant images, also the color doesn’t change when viewing from different angles. This phone has a 19.5 to 9 screen ratio, which is a little bit tall – may be some specific videos may cut out, but overall the quality of the display is very good and you won’t be disappointed.

Beside this, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro comes with a notch display. This year Huawei has put a 3D depth sensor in the device that can properly read your face to log you in your device, the cool thing is that if you are not a notch lover is you can disable it and won’t lose much of a screen like Pixel 3. Going to the security aspect offered by the phone, Huawei added an in-display fingerprint sensor on the Mate 20 Pro and got rid of the physical fingerprint scanner that was on previous P10 and 20 series. You will also get the face unlocking feature to access your device. Both the option works quite well, but personally feel the physical fingerprint scanner is little faster than in display as this adds few extra seconds to first switch on the screen and then unlock. The face unlock option is quick and accurate thanks to its 3D depth sensor.

Camera :

The big thing about this device for us is its camera system. Huawei flagship smartphones are known for its Lyca lenses that have superb AI capabilities. Compare to the vertically allied triple camera setup of the P20 Pro the Mate 20 Pro cameras are placed in a square form, together with its LED flash. Getting three lenses on the back, a 40 megapixel sensor means you have more information to work with, a 20 megapixel lens so you can have those wide landscape shots very similar to the LG G7 and  a 8 megapixel telephoto lens allowing you to zoom upto 3 time, that’s insane specs in a smartphone camera, you will get 3 focal lens to work with, and if you love smartphone photography than you will love playing with this device. And also like to mention that the software inside it also allow you lots of flexibility, Huawei Mate 20 Pro camera are AI enabled and will instantly recognised the scene and automatically enhanced the photo.

Portrait mode of this device also works like a charm, the bokeh effect does not look artificial anyway and also gives you sharp edges to make the subject pop out of the background.Everyone wants to know how it performs in low light in compare to Google Pixle 3, after taking few shots in low light we are excited by the amount of details it is producing, it is undeniable that the Mate 20 Pro can capture amazing night shots, also master AI technology helps you to  automatically detect the scene as night and will take the photo with long exposure, without using a tripod. The front camera is also good for selfies, and it has an AI beautification feature, portrait mode and more, you can tweek the AI beauty mode for your liking and take a selfie if needed. In the portrait mode the bokeh effect has also gave good results.

Another big improvement from Huawei in this Mate 20 Pro is its video recording capability, they have really improved the 4K video recording and stabilization.

Under the Hood:

Now if we talk about its other features, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro carries the companies latest HiSilicon Kirin 980 chipset which is said to be more powerful than any 10nm chipsets, along the new processor there’s a Mali-G76 MP10 GPU and the handset runs on a EMUI OS based on Android 9.0(Pie) out of the box. Furthermore EMUI 9 supports GPU turbo 2.0. Talking about media playback in this device, its enjoyable with its color accuracy, sharp details and large display. Had a great experience playing PUBG & Asphalt 9 with no lag thanks to its faster and newer chipset.

Its 5 % larger than last years already huge pack in the Mate 10 Pro, still one of the longest lasting phone that we know. The Huawei Mate 20 Pro packs a 4200mAh battery and it enjoys Huawei’s 40W supercharge, that stoots 0 to 70% in 30 min. It also comes with an wireless charging and just a flip of a switch in the settings you can reverse that wireless charging. So that means your phone becomes charging pad for another phone, you may say its inefficient or a gimmick but it comes handy. Believe it or not it gives almost 2 days of battery life for a power users.

If you recently bought the P20 Pro, we don’t have much reason for you to switch, but if you are looking for a better flagship phone with stunning look, great camera performance and good battery life, this is a clear choice for you. For us this is surely 2018’s top smartphone. The Huawei Mate 20 Pro is priced at Rs 69,990.
