Alibaba Cloud Bets Big On India, Launches Channel Program

Alibaba Cloud, the cloud service and solutions provider from the Chinese behemoth Alibaba Group, is eyeing the over $2 billion Indian public cloud services market and started spreading its wings.

The company that opened its first data center in Mumbai in January this year also announced its India channel partner program recently during its India Partner Eco Summit. Under this program Alibaba Cloud would scout for local channel partners and work with them to offer cloud solutions to India’s enterprises, SMEs and Startups, a top visiting official from Alibaba Cloud said.

However, for 2018, Alibaba’s focus will majorly be on big enterprises in India.

“Alibaba Cloud has always been dedicated to empower enterprises of different sizes to tap into opportunities in the digital age. With digital transformation poised to add close to $ 154 billion to India’s GDP, this is a great opportunity for us to do business in India. We are excited about the launch of the distribution channel program as building a strong, collaborative partner ecosystem is essential to our growth strategy in India. Through working with different partners, we will be able to bring our high quality products and services to customers in India to help them embrace the opportunities of digital transformation,” said Alex Li, General Manager of Alibaba Cloud Asia Pacific.

According to IDC, India currently ranks third on the list of countries in APeJ with $ 2.12 billion spent on public could services.

The major cloud service providers offering their services include Amazon Web service (AWS) and Microsoft Azure besides scores of local firms.

When asked if Alibaba Cloud is interested in acquiring or investing in any of the local cloud providers Alex said the firm has no such plans as of now.

“We have been approached by almost all such players but we do not have any plan now,” Li said.

The Chinese cloud service provder would like to cater to this market with its high-performing and highly-secure products and services to clients in India across the e-commerce, gaming, media, retail and IoT sectors through an extensive network of distributors.

To achieve this, as part of its partner program, the firm announced to train 1,000 sales and technology personnel in India in the next six months. Alibaba Cloud has also appointed HCL Infosystems as its major value added distributor.
