Jolla Sailfish Becomes Official Mobile OS In Russia, BRICS Countries Next

Sailfish OS, the mobile operating system developed by Finnish firm Jolla, has become the official mobile OS for the Russian government. The government as well as state run corporations, now onwards, will use the Sailfish OS as the sole mobile OS for its future mobile devices and mobile communications.

Besides Russia, Jolla is in talks with other BRICS countries including China and South Africa for a similar kind of status, said the company. The company is expected to expand its arm to two other countries of BRICS – India and Brazil.

“We have now done this in Russia with a local partner and using this experience we are looking forward to ramping up similar projects in other countries,” said Jolla CEO Sami Pienimaki.

Having an alternate mobile OS, moving away from Apple iOS and Google Android, has also been discussed in the recent BRICS Summit held in Goa.

In Russia, Sailfish OS is the only mobile operating system, which has been officially accepted to be used in governmental and government controlled corporations’ upcoming mobile device projects.

Last year, the Russian Ministry of Communications publicly expressed support for the Sailfish OS agenda in Russia, which is part of Russia’s long term objective to create a more independent IT ecosystem for the country.

Jolla, which was created from integrating ideas from Nokia and Intel’s MeeGo, has partnered with a local mobile platform development company – Open Mobile Platform – to customize and further develop Sailfish OS for the Russian market, and to answer to local Russian needs.

Open Mobile Platform has already started rapidly building the local developer community for Sailfish OS in Russia, Jolla said.

“Sailfish OS development in Russia is an important part of Jolla’s wider agenda, aiming to power various countries’mobile ecosystems. Our solution is based on open source code and contribution models with partners, which makes it possible to ramp up local systems effectively in 6 months,” Jolla CEO added.
