Cyclone Fani : Telecom Services Hit; Airtel, Vodafone Idea Say Ready For Any Emergency

Telecom services including mobile services appear to be severely hit in Odisha barely hours after Cyclone Fani made landfall near Puri in Odisha this morning. Wind speed has been recorded at 145 to 175 kms per hour and the coastal areas including Jajpur, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Paradip, Berhampur and even Bhubaneswar are reported to be severely hit during this natural calamity.

While the telecom services were expected to be hit during situations like these, all leading telecom operators like Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea have stated that they are real for any sort of emergencies and put all their machineries in place to keep the state back to normalcy as far as telecom services are concerned.

“War rooms with dedicated teams have been established in the state/circle offices to monitor impact of operations and coordinate quick recovery,” an Airtel spokesperson said. “These war rooms are also coordinating with Government Authorities such as NDMA.

The statement also added that advanced fuel filling done at all sites to ensure connectivity and maximum network uptime.

“Additional resources planned for affected clusters including manpower for network operations, equipment, fuel and vehicles,” it added.

As a responsible telecom service provider in the country, Airtel also made a provision to offer free SMS in three affected states for 5 days.

Besides, “emergency Intra Circle Roaming is being opened with other operators,” the firm stated.

Country’s largest operator Vodafone Idea has also taken all necessary steps to keep the state its people remain connected during this emergency.

“Vodafone Idea is strongly committed to provide seamless connectivity to people, especially at times of emergency. We have taken all necessary precautions to face cyclone Fani,” the company said in a statement.

“Proactively, we have ensured sufficient fuel supply to our sites across all locations, and stocking at strategic locations, for use in times of emergency. Additionally, mobile DGs, critical equipment spares and vehicles have been arranged and kept ready at key locations,” it added.

The operator also created a Helpline number ‘1938’ is for people to reach out in case of an emergency.

Like Airtel, Vodafone Idea also announced to offer Free SMS for VIL customers. Besides, the company is offering a talkative loan of Rs. 5 and Rs10 for users if they exhaust balance during emergency.

“Vodafone Idea teams have been prepared to manage any emergency situation and network monitoring is being done through 24×7 War Rooms set up at VIL and vendor offices. We are working closely with other network providers (for ICR), partners and Government agencies to ensure stable telecom connectivity during the cyclone to let people stay connected with their loved ones, the operator said.
