In FY 2014-15, Phablets reported a phenomenal growth largely due to low cost and big screen size phones. With 50.8 million unit sales and with rural-urban break-up at around 20:80 last year, Phablets are expected to grow by around 65 percent in FY 2015-16.

People are seeing phablets as a multi-utility device and coupled with the ease of usage it helps in making it a preferred device over other devices.

Smartphone sales have increased by 33 percent over the last year and stood at 69.66 million in FY 2014-15. The rural-urban breakup for smartphones is 40:60 and it is forecasted to grow at 25 percent to reach 88.4 million. Smartphone is planned to grow thanks to aggressive deployment of 4G services and expansion of 3G service by mobile operators in India.

Notebook is poised to grow by 17 percent in FY 2015-16 thanks to procurement of 1.1 million units by Tamil Nadu government through ELCOT route. In absence of ELCOT procurement, notebook would have shown a flat growth.

The story of digitization will help in the growth of printers by 11 percent. In the printer category, growth is mainly in laserjet printer and inkjet printer.

Commenting on the findings, Amar Babu, president, MAIT said, “We also see a ray of hope for PC growth in future on account of some of Digital India initiatives which aims at having a digital Infrastructure as a utility to every citizen, governance and services on demand, and digital empowerment of citizens.”

The overall size of Indian ICT hardware market stands at $15.87 billion in FY 2014-15, showing a growth of 24 percent over the previous year. Segments which have done extremely well in FY 2014-15 include: Phablet i.e. smartphones which has a screen size of 5-inch and more (527% growth), smartphone (33% growth), Server (30% growth), laser jet printer (5% growth) and keyboard (2% growth).

Biswapriya Bhattacharjee, vice president, BIRD, IMRB International said, “The study is based on over 42,000 face-to-face interviews with end-users spread over 35 cities with data projected to the ‘All India Urban market’ and 41 SCRs (socio economic regions) to estimate the All India Rural market. It involved data collection after the ‘last mile’ that the product travels, i.e. from the premise where the product is finally installed.”
