The last decade saw Internet becoming a big a part of our daily lives. Nearly everyone has a 4G phone nowadays. 4G allows users to stream video, watch movies, listen to music without buffering and play online games like royalpanda seamlessly. It took some time before 4G arrived in India but once it did, it grew faster than expected, and a certain company deserves full credit for that. But, while 4G has taken over the world, its dominance might be nearing the final few years, with the entry of 5G.

As the number of 4G user keeps on growing at an exponential rate, the networks are about to reach their limit. The networks are getting extremely cramped and has already started showing its impact – slower 4G speeds – across most countries where 4G is the primary communication technology.

This drop in speed will continue to grow unless an alternative to 4G is found and this is where 5G comes in.

Yes, it is the name of the next generation of mobile networks but what does that really mean? Is it just a term used to signal a rise in the internet speed or is there going to be something more? The truth of the matter is that 5G will bring the biggest change to mobile networks since 1G and has the potential to change everything that depends on internet connectivity.

So here are 5 facts you didn’t know about 5G.

1. Much higher frequency bands will be used

One of the biggest problems 4G networks across the globe are facing is the extreme data load on it because of the humongous amount of data consumption by users. The number of 4G users in India itself has skyrocketed in just the last couple of years and is showing barely any chances of slowing down which leads to the 4G networks having trouble keeping up this insane rise in demand.

These providers will soon be left with only two options, either continue to provide 4G on the same frequency bands as everyone else and just deal with the problems that will rise from this or try to move to higher frequencies, which is not really possible for 4G networks.

Therefore, one of the biggest objectives of 5G is to use much higher frequencies for its broadcast. These higher frequencies are completely free from any clutter and are thus will allow 5G waves off to move around without other signals getting in their way. On top of that, the range of frequencies that can be used for 5G is so huge that even if there are multiple companies that get into providing their own 5G services, they can pick their own bands from this range and thus keep the network itself from getting crammed.

2. Brand New Technologies will come into play

Since 5G will be using frequencies that are higher than the ones that are currently been used for large scale network communication, new technologies will have to be implemented on a massive scale as the current infrastructure is will mostly incompatible with 5G.

The waves that will be used to broadcast 5G are millimetre waves, which are very different from the ones used for 4G as these waves cannot penetrate buildings or trees and can be absorbed by multiple surfaces.

The towers that are currently used for broadcasting 4G won’t be sufficient to properly broadcast 5G and thus other technologies will have to be used instead. “Small cells” are one of these technologies. They are basically just miniature network stations which are portable and they will be placed at regular intervals across the entire city. They will prevent the 5G network from dropping, by acting like boosters that will ensure uninterrupted and seamless use of 5G services.

Apart from these small cells, the main network towers will have to be equipped with Massive MIMOs in order to keep up the standard speed which 5G was created to achieve, and “Beamforming” will be used to ensure that the signals reach their indented targets without any trouble or delay.

3. An immense rise in internet speeds

2G allowed us to use the internet on our mobile phones but the speed was too slow, 3G provided a speed which made playing videos a practical possibility and 4G enhanced that experience to a great degree.

5G, however, will be in a league of its own. The technologies that will be used to provide 5G will allow it’s network speed will be an astronomical step up from 4G. From letting people download a movie, that would take around 10-15 minutes on a conventional 4G network, in just a single second, to enabling lag-free HD group video calls—something which is not possible with 4G unless some very ideal network and software conditions are met.

4. A larger impact on the world.

But this immense speed won’t make downloading movies fast, it will have a much larger impact on the world.
IoT has been on the rise in the past decade but one the biggest hurdles it has yet to overcome is that the speed of the current networks is not enough to give IoT users a seamless experience but 5G will completely solve this problem, which can lead to much faster growth of IoT.

Self-driving cars have been a reality of a few years but putting them on the road isn’t completely safe as they need to be in constant communication with satellites in order to function properly and even a few milliseconds of latency can lead to disastrous consequences. 5G will have a latency of under one millisecond which makes it perfectly suitable to be used by self-driving cars and will allow them to finally run on the traffic-filled roads of most big cities.
Blockchain technology, cloud computing, machine learning and virtual reality are all technologies that jointly have the potential to change the world and they are going to greatly benefit from the rise of 5G.

5. The 5G timeline

While work on 5G technologies has been going on for quite some time, and recently some major advances have been made but the day when 5G becomes as widespread and common as 4G is nowadays is still a little far into the future.

As this article stated earlier, a significant upgrade on the existing network infrastructure is required before 5G services can be started for the general public in any real capacity and that can take quite a while.

Nokia has planned to launch 5G services before the end of 2019 but that is a deadline that will be nigh-impossible for it to meet in any meaningful way. However, proper 5G services should start to pop up during the early 202s and widespread adoption is possible before the end of the next decade.

Regardless of the wait, 5G will almost definitely worth all the hype it has gathered in the years leading up its launch.
