Samsung Galaxy Tab Iris Bags Most Innovative Product Award From IESA

Samsung India has bagged the most Innovative Product Award for its Samsung Galaxy Tab Iris at the IESA Technovation Awards that were held in Bengaluru.

The prestigious Indian Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA) Technovation awards recognize role models for innovation and excellence in products developed in India for the Electronics and Semiconductor industry that have had a positive impact on the market.

“The marriage between advanced technology like Iris-based biometric processing and the Digital India vision of providing technology to every citizen is the uniqueness of this product. It is creating solutions that touch lives of people across multiple strata of society,” said Dr. Aloknath De, Chief Technology Officer, Samsung R&D Institute Bangalore.

Galaxy Tab Iris is yet another ‘Make for India’ innovation from Samsung. In May 2016, Samsung India announced the launch of Galaxy Tab Iris device that is Aadhaar-compliant and STQC-certified. “The award demonstrates the entrepreneurial start-up culture within Samsung. Along with the Galaxy Tab Iris device, Samsung provides an Identity SDK for application developers to build financial inclusion, payments and authentication solutions. This will encourage the start-up ecosystem to build relevant apps and services. The overall offering will in turn strengthen government programs such as Jan Dhan Yojana and E-Citizen services under the Digital India initiative,” Samsung India said in a statement.

The easy-to-use biometric technology, currently incorporated in the Galaxy Tab Iris will help citizens of India get access to financial inclusion benefits. It will also encourage cashless and paperless services in various applications such as banking, eGovernance services such as passport, taxation, healthcare and education. The solution will support government programs and will enable banks and financial institutions to streamline the process of an individual’s authentication, regardless of language and literacy barriers.

In total the country saw sales of 0.97 million tablets in Q3 ended 30 September and Aakash tablet maker Datawind contributed the maximum to the sales capturing 33% market share.

Samsung was placed at #2 position with 16% market share where as iBall, with 13% market share, is placed at #3. The next three vendors were Pantel, Micromax and Apple, according to the report.

There some more interesting facts about the Indian tablet market. There are two types of tablet being sold in the country, one with data calling facility and the other without. All these tablets access data over telecom operators’ 2G, 3G or 4G network as well as WiFi.

As per the report, in the 4G segment, the market witnessed about 45% growth in 3Q’ CY 2016. Lenovo took to the first position with about 39% market share, while Samsung and iBall held 30% and 17%, market shares, respectively.

“Among all the technology segments, 4G witnessed maximum traction in the third quarter, and the fourth generation services could be instrumental in providing content-first strategy. Content could be a magic bullet for infusing growth in the, otherwise, stagnant tablet market, especially through sectors such as education and healthcare. Content-related strategies will help in imparting education in a proper manner to country’s hinterlands too,” said Amit Sharma, Analyst, CMR.

The Wi-Fi enabled tablets, however, saw a decline of around 20% during the said period.

Going forward, the report states the tablet industry may see the survival of the fittest in the next couple of years, with only 6-7 serious players remaining in the sector. Indian Tablet Market Posts 8.2% Growth in 2015

Indian-Tablet-Market-Posts-8.2%-Growth-In-2015Indian tablet market posted a growth of 8.2 percent to reach 3.8 million units in 2015 according to IDC.

The overall tablet market in India declined by 18.7 percentage in Q4 2015 over Q3 2015. 0.86 million units of tablets were shipped in Q4 2015, down 10.1 percentage over the same period last year. However, with each of previous two quarters clocking over a million units of shipments, total tablet market for 2015 managed to post a growth of 8.2 percentage at 3.8 million units, recovering from a sharp dip in 2014.

Detachables began to ramp up gradually in 2015, especially Q2 2015 onwards. Detachable shipments spiked sharply although it was in comparison to smaller volumes in 2014. 2015 Q4 was also the first quarter to have detachables from all three major OS platforms.

“Majority of detachables shipped in 2015 were in $200-$300 price band, primarily driven by local vendors such as Micromax and iBall. On the premium end, Samsung currently dominates but competition is likely to get intense with Apple entering the market with iPad pro and Microsoft Surface Pro joining the league in 2016 Q1” says, Karthik J, senior market analyst, IDC India.

Both Windows and Intel have gained share in 2015 mainly through local vendors in addition to Acer and Lenovo. Windows based tablet shipment more than tripled in 2015 over last year while Intel clocked a healthy 49.3 percentage annual growth.

Larger screen slate tablets gaining share as 7-inch tablets continue to face pressure from phablets (large screen smartphone). 2015 shipment of 8”-9.9” screen tablet grew annually at 39.2 percentage accounting for 15.9 percentage of overall slate tablet volume.

Datawind’s steady ramp in 2015 led them to the top spot in Q4 2015 with 20.7 percentage vendor share. With continued focus on entry level i.e. sub $100 tablet segment, shipments almost doubled year-on-year in 2015 Q4. Cost benefits through local manufacturing, free internet bundled tablets, higher online presence in Q4 2015 were few key factors which worked in favor of the vendor.

Samsung took the second place in Q4 2015 with 15.8 percentage share, as shipments dip by 8.7 percentage sequentially against Q3 2015. Samsung is seen as the only vendor dominating in the premium end of the category with Android based detachables i.e. Galaxy Tab S2.

Micromax shipments dip sequentially by 24.1 percentage in Q4 2015 with market share of 15.5 percentage. The vendor’s shipments more than doubled over the same period last year in Q4. Micromax played a pivotal role in driving detachables’ shipments in the year 2015 as it accounted for more than 1/3rd of the category’s overall volume.

Lenovo shipments grew 5.7 percentage over previous quarter in Q4 2015 to register its highest ever vendor share of 13.8 percentage in India. Being the only PC vendor in top 5, commercial segment is the key driver for Lenovo’s healthy 57.6 percentage annual growth in 2015.

iBall managed to stay in Top 5 despite of sharp sequential dip of 45.2 percentage in shipments in Q4 2015. In the growing detachable category, iBall saw flattish performance throughout 2015 accounting for 12.5 percentage of shipments.

2016 is expected to witness a marginal growth as consumer demand for tablets hits saturation. However, IDC expects commercial segment to witness healthy double digit growth this year.

“Detachable tablet category is anticipated to ramp further as vendors strive to capitalize on the growth momentum by offering products at affordable prices. However, the migration from slate to detachable tablets in India would only be gradual,” adds Karthik.
