MediaTek Launches Open Source Development Platform

mediatek-chipMediaTek Labs today announced a new  Smart 7688 development platform, the latest addition to the LinkIt portfolio of development platforms. This new platform offers a variety of programming options and enables rapid development of advanced Wi-Fi based devices such as IP cameras, surveillance devices, smart appliances and Wi-Fi gateways that make use of cloud services.

Two versions of the platform’s Hardware Development Kit (HDK) are available: the LinkIt Smart 7688, which includes a microprocessor unit (MPU) based on the MediaTek MT7688AN system-on-chip (SOC), and the LinkIt Smart 7688 Duo, which in addition to the MPU includes a microcontroller unit (MCU) and is Arduino compatible. Both development boards feature built-in Wi-Fi, generous 128MB RAM and 32MB Flash, and a wide variety of options for connecting peripherals.

“MediaTek Labs is focused on stimulating innovation in IoT and is pleased to extend its LinkIt family of development platforms to the open-source and web developer communities, enabling broader product development for a more connected world,” said Marc Naddell, VP of MediaTek Labs. “The new LinkIt Smart 7688 development platform will appeal to a wide range of developers because of its open-source software compatibility, support for several popular programming languages and use of Linux.”

The LinkIt Smart 7688 will benefit three developer communities, the company claimed.

OpenWrt: Developers can use the standard OpenWrt SDK to create native C applications for their IoT device, taking advantage of over 2000 software packages offering additional functionality. Web and mobile app developers: With support for Node.js and Python, the platform offers an easy route into IoT development.

Arduino: (LinkIt Smart 7688 Duo only) Makers can use the popular Arduino IDE to develop applications for the MCU and have realtime control of peripherals.

LinkIt Smart 7688 is able to take advantage of the MediaTek Cloud Sandbox for data collection, visualization and analytics during development.

Nokia, Save The Children Collaborate For Disaster Management

nokia-save-the-childrenNokia and Save the Children announced today an extension of their collaboration on the social cause to protect children from disasters. The program was launched in 2014 across 5 states – Bihar, Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh, Delhi and Rajasthan. Under the collaboration which aims to “Use Connectivity to build Resilience of Children and their Communities in India”, Nokia will now deploy technology solutions to enable critical communication during disasters.

Phase 1 of the program was recently concluded in 176 villages where the Save the Children project team helped prepare communities to respond efficiently both during and after disasters by creating specific disaster management plans, school safety plans and village task-forces.

In phase 2, Save the Children will extend the program to another 174 villages and develop partnerships with relevant stakeholders – nodal department and ministries in the government and civil societies — to strengthen the disaster resilience model in all 350 villages.

Nokia will provide an LTE-based Network-in-a-box (NIB) solution for Public Safety Mobile Broadband. It is a system in which the main mobile network functions are integrated into a small ‘box’ and can be deployed during disasters in case the main operator run-network is impacted, to enable communication between early responders and task forces. The solution, which will be deployed in 6 pilot villages in early 2016, will act as a standalone communication system complete with its radio, core, access and application layers.  Additionally, information and communication technology will also be provided to help track the distribution of entitlements under various social protection schemes to the communities in these villages.

Guvera CEO Darren Herft said that this decision has been made to ensure customers have unlimited access to Guvera’s music library and curated playlists, without being restricted by excessive data consumption.

Airtel Starts Internet Awareness Campaign E-Shakti in MP

airtel-e-shaktiBharti Airtel on Wednesday started an internet awareness campaign targeting the women population in the state of Madhya Pradesh. The program called ‘E-Shakti’ was launched in association with the Government of Madhya Pradesh for one of its Digital India Week initiatives.

This initiative is aimed at building internet awareness and literacy among the women of Madhya Pradesh. The initiative was launched today by Hon’ble Minister for Science and Technology Shri Bhoopendra Singh at a ceremony held at Subhash Excellence School, Bhopal. A training session was also conducted at the launch program for over 300 girl students.
The training aims at empowering the women with useful knowledge on internet which would make them adopt and use internet in their daily lives leading into a digitally inclusive society. The State Government has identified the girl students from Government schools and colleges and women employees of various Government departments as the beneficiaries of ‘E-Shakti’ initiative. The 1st phase of the initiative will be conducted across 6 Districts of Madhya Pradesh – Bhopal, Dewas, Gwalior, Damoh, Dhar and Satna.

Speaking on the occasion, Vir Inder Nath, Chief Executive Officer, Madhya Pradesh & Chhattisgarh, Bharti Airtel Ltd said, “Internet has the potential to transform the society into a strong, prosperous & progressive ecosystem. Each session would be attended by 50-70 members.

LTE Roaming Traffic Up By 25% in FY14 : BICS

BICSBICS, a global wholesale carrier for voice, mobile data and capacity services, today announced a rapid increase in LTE roaming traffic over its market-leading IPX network. Last year, kicked off by the European holiday season of 2014, the company experienced a 25% month-on-month growth in traffic which continued throughout 2014 and into the first quarter of 2015.

BICS’ LTE roaming services are supported by its IPX transit capabilities, which also enjoyed a huge increase in adoption rates and traffic levels over the last year. During 2014, capacity usage on the BICS GRX network grew 45% while in the same period IPX transport – comprising of next generation data traffic – grew by 400%.

Focused on enabling operators to leverage the latest available technologies, BICS has been at the centre of the evolution of IPX and introduction of LTE roaming services. During the last year, BICS enabled launches across EMEA, APAC, LATAM and North America, in countries such as France, Rwanda, South Africa, Russia, Poland, UAE and Saudi Arabia.

Access to domestic LTE now covers 90% of consumers in developed markets, according to the GSMA’s Mobile Economy 2015 report. With such widespread domestic availability, subscribers now expect the same data speeds when they are travelling. In order to meet these new demands, operators need to replace their existing SS7 signalling network with a new IP signalling infrastructure built on an IPX network, a change that requires a whole set of commercial agreements and technical interconnections.
