China Mobile To Deploy Nokia GPON Mobile Solution

The technology provides China Mobile with the backhaul infrastructure needed to support residential subscribers, enterprises, hotels, banks, schools and hospitals spread over some of China’s most populated areas, and will deliver high-quality mobile data experiences its subscribers now expect in the 4G/5G era.

Focused on expanding indoor and outdoor coverage in urban areas, China Mobile is investing in new base stations and more than one hundred thousand LTE small cells, which will be networked over the GPON fiber backhaul technology.

Nokia’s GPON mobile backhaul solution allows China Mobile to further develop its LTE broadband user base, while at the same time expand its fiber to the home (FTTH) footprint needed to connect more residential and enterprise users.

China Mobile will be able to gain the network capacity, flexibility and scale needed to support the 54 percent increase in data traffic expected across Asia Pacific by 20201. The streamlining of network operations will also lower the total cost of ownership and simultaneously enhance subscribers’ mobile service experiences.

Nokia’s Wireline Mobile Backhaul solution includes the Nokia 7360 Intelligent Services Access Manager and the Nokia 7368 ISAM ONT, which deliver premium services over a GPON fiber backhaul environment.

Ooredoo Oman and Ericsson trialled a range of solutions that can deliver gigabit backhaul capacity, supported by the availability of new radio access spectrum. E-band (70/80GHz) spectrum is the key to supporting microwave and meeting increased capacity requirements for both backhaul and fronthaul.

The world’s highest-capacity E-band radio, the new Ericsson MINI-LINK 6352, was successfully trialled, providing 5.7 Gbps over one carrier. Four carriers in traditional frequency bands and narrower channels were bonded together to provide 1.6 Gbps.

The success of the trial proves the capability of microwave to address growing data traffic demands and support operators in offering superior mobile broadband experiences to their customers.

Nokia AirScale Radio Access: Nokia’s next generation AirScale Radio Access will radically alter the way networks are built. Operators will be able to use Nokia AirScale Radio Access to profitably satisfy future demands including IoT, virtual reality, augmented reality, factories of the future and other advanced scenarios such as video that demand extreme performance.

Nuage Networks: In the Nuage Networks by Nokia VNS solution, software-defined network (SDN) infrastructure spans in a consistent fashion across datacenters in private and public clouds and extends to remote locations anywhere.

Smart Home: This demo showed how network providers (telcos, cable MSOs, community broadband providers) can leverage the residential gateway already present in each home (be it a fiber ONT or DSL modem) to expand their services offer into the smart/connected Home – and ward of over-the-top competition.

Smart City: Showcased few use cases of IoT on smart parking, smart metering and smart lighting.

IoT use cases: Demonstration details how service providers can take advantage of new technologies to enable new IoT business models. The market trial concepts demonstrated are: connected service vehicle, smart bus shelter and smart university campus.

Under networks for cloud era, Nokia demonstrated how networks can benefit from virtualization and automation with less hardware and how all this impacts efficiency, quality, innovation and business opportunities. Through its converged offering for mobile, fixed, IP and optical networks, Nokia is blending connectivity together and providing a new grid for the programmable world.

Orange Egypt Selects NEC’s iPASOLINK E-band Microwave Radio

This innovative all-outdoor radio is scheduled to go live in April 2016 with an initial group of 60 links.

iPASOLINK EX is an advanced IP radio used for backhauling LTE traffic in the E-Band spectrum, and covers the frequency bands of 71-76 GHz and 81-86 GHz. It provides an invaluable tool for 4G (LTE and WiMAX) deployments and LTE small cell aggregation, and is capable of delivering over 3.2Gbps of traffic per link.

China Unicom And ZTE Sign Agreement On SDN/NFV

China-Unicom-And-ZTE-Sign-Agreement-On-SDN/NFVZTE has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with China Unicom on Software Defined Network (SDN)/Network Function Virtualization (NFV).

Both parties aim to build-on current SDN/NFV network development trends through collaborative innovation, implement SDN/NFV applications, and promote the next-generation network construction for China Unicom, meeting customers’ demands and promoting network transformation, business innovation, and service upgrade.

China Unicom has been proactively promoting the SDN/NFV industry process. The voice over long term evolution (VoLTE) service project based on virtual evolved packet core (vEPC) and virtual IP multimedia subsystem (vIMS) architecture sponsored by China Unicom for NFV proof of concept (PoC) was successfully completed in October 2015.

This project comprehensively verified the SDN/NFV-based end-to-end VoLTE services, promoted the NFV process, and practiced the network as a service (NaaS) concept advocated by China Unicom.

In accordance with the new-generation network, CUBE-net, proposed by China Unicom and the strategic cooperation agreement signed by China Unicom and ZTE, both parties will cooperate using open-source technology, application scenarios, product requirements, service applications, and market development of SDN/NFV technologies, generate research results meeting network evolution requirements and lay a solid foundation for long-term and sustainable partnerships.

China Unicom and ZTE will work together with open-source communities, requirement analysis, solution and product development, test verification/PoC and commercial pilot office deployment for SDN/NFV. In addition, China Unicom and ZTE will continue research and propose draft standards and patent applications, jointly apply for and undertake national key research projects, and share the achievements in the SDN/NFV field.

“The partnership with ZTE should focus on China Unicom’s marketing and business development needs, and start from service innovation and technological innovation to establish a market-oriented innovation mechanism, and adopt open-source, iterative, and other new R&D models,” said Chi Yongsheng, deputy director, China Unicom Network Technology Research Institute.

“With its rapid development, SDN/NFV is destined to become an important trend for network evolution. ZTE and China Unicom have established long-term partnerships. Today, both parties work with each other again by signing a strategic cooperation memorandum in the field of SDN/NFV, thereby accelerating the revolution in network technologies and the development of the entire industry through continuous innovation and exploration,” said Liu Peng, vice president, ZTE.
