BlackBerry 9720 launched in India

BlackBerry 9720 with dedicated BBM key

The original smartphone maker BlackBerry on Thursday launched one more smartphone in the Indian market. The mid segment model – BlackBerry 9720 is priced at Rs 15,990 and for the first time sports a dedicated BBM key.

Specification wise the BlackBerry 9720 features a 2.8 inch touchscreen display with 480X360 pixel resolution and uses a 806 Mhz Tavor MG1 processor. Also, it comes with a 512MB RAM.The BlackBerry 9720 sports a 5 megapixel EDOF camera with 4X digital zoom and 512mn of internal memory. As a practice this memory can also be extended with the use of external microSD card. The device also comes with 1,450 mAh battery that Blackberry claims would offer 7 hours of talktime and 18 days of standby time.

Besides, the device offers 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS support. Interestingly, Blackberry 9720 doesn’t run on its flagship operating system -BB10- but on the upgraded version of BB 7 – the BB 7.1.

Over the last couple of years, the Canadian phone maker is wading through troubled waters as its been loosing revenue as well as market share, not only in India but also in global markets. At present, it grasps little over 3% of Indian mobile phone market share, and not even in the top 5 mobile phone companies doing business here.

Globally also, the company’s situation is no better. It is evident from the recent announcement by the company that the BlackBerry maker has started exploring all possible options to turn around the company.

Nokia launches low-cost phone with Urdu language support

Nokia today launched a low cost feature phone that supports Urdu language. This is the first mobile device in the country to support the language, claimed Nokia. Priced at Rs 2,579, the new device- Nokia 114- was launched by telecom minister Kapil Sibal at an event in Delhi.

Nokia 114 is a Dual SIM phone, featuring Easy Swap technology which enables users to switch between SIMs quickly without having to remove their battery or turn off their phone. The Easy Swap technology can personalize and remember up to five different SIM cards, giving consumers full control over their mobile bills,a company statement said.

The phone has been optimized to provide a long-lasting battery life, with over 10 hours of talk time and nearly a month’s standby time.

“India today has one of the largest Urdu speaking populations in the world. The proliferation of Urdu language is deep rooted in our culture and we would like to connect this language to internet and mobile telephony like English. I would like to thank Nokia for being at the forefront of launching something unique which will benefit the over 15 crore Urdu speaking people in India,” said Sibal.

Nokia is the first mobile phone company to introduce regional language content in 11 Indian languages since 2008- Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Gujarati, Bengali, Oriya, Assamese, Punjabi, and Marathi. It is the first company to introduce an in house app called Akshar for the Asha Touch range of affordable smartphones. Akshar supports 11 Indian languages and allows consumers to interact in their local language.

“We were the first mobile company to support content and user interface in 11 Indian languages in India. Introducing Urdu keymat in Nokia 114 is another such initiative to reach out to our consumer across the country,” said Nokia India MD P Balaji.

ZTE’s Grand Memo LTE gets nod for China sales


ZTE’s Grand Memo LTE is poised to become the first 4G device available for sale in China.

The LTE smartphone became the first to be awarded a TD-LTE handset permit by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, China.

The single-SIM, dual stand-by voice solution used by ZTE Grand Memo LTE (Model No U9815), a quad-band device compatible with the TD-LTE/FDD/TDS/GSM bands, means it is capable of supporting simultaneous high-speed data transmission and high-quality voice calls.

The ZTE Grand Memo LTE is the 4G version of ZTE’s flagship Grand Memo device, offering superior specifications including a 5.7-inch high-definition display with 1280×720 resolution, a 1.5 GHz nVidia Tegra3 quad-core processor, 12-core GPU and 13 million pixel camera, supporting 1080P HD video playback and recording.

BSNL and Champion Computers to co-brand smartphones and tablets

Champion Computers (CCPL), a ICT and computer peripherals manufacturer and distributor has entered into a strategic alliance with government-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) to roll out co-branded smartphones and tablets.

As a part of this association, Champion Computers along with BSNL will shortly roll BSNL co-branded products like smartphones, tablets, PCs, data cards and wireless networking products. Champion Computers will bring in technology and manufacturing skills whereas BSNL will address the connectivity issue through its wide reach of connectvity across length and breadth of the country.

iBall Andi launches Projector Smart Phone


iBall today launched a projector phone in the Indian market. Called Andi 4a Projector, the smartphone integrates brightness of 35 Lumens with LED light projection, contrast ratio of 1200:1. This allows its users to beam videos, photos and even movies on a screen as big as almost 10 feet by 8 feet.

Priced at Rs 17,999 the Andi 4a Projector runs on android Jelly Bean 4.1, and comes with an 8MP auto focus camera fitted with  LED flash.
Among technical specifications the Andi 4a comes with a 4 inch IPS WVGA screen, 1GHz dual core Cortex processor and 512 MB RAM. It has a 12 GB internal memory and is backed up by a 1500 mAh battery. The company claims the battery is powerful enough to offer 2 hours of projector time.
