Apple starts trade-in programme for non-Apple chargers

Apple today said that starting August 16, it would launch a worldwide programme to replace counterfeit Apple mobile chargers. This initiative was a response to the reported death of a Chinese woman while using a non-Apple charger with her iPhone.

“Customer safety is a top priority at Apple,” the company stated today and the charger takeback program is intended to ensure the apple device users are safe.

“That’s why all of our products — including USB power adapters for iPhone, iPad, and iPod — undergo rigorous testing for safety and reliability and are designed to meet government safety standards around the world.” Chargers made by companies other than Apple, however, may not meet the same safety standards, the company added.

The company also said that though most of the third party chargers are safe, those Apple device users who feel their charger may not be safe, can go to the nearest Apple retail store and get a new charger. However, the replacement is not free but the company has said it would offer the new chargers at a discounted price, almost at half of the new ones.

The USB adapter take back programme will run from August 16 to October 18, but only in US, it may vary by country.

Last month a Chinese lady, Ma Ailun, was reportedly electrocuted when she was taking on her iPhone while the phone was still charging. When Apple investigated the matter it was found that the woman was using a non Apple charger.

Apple hopes its takeback program will prevent any untoward incidents like this in future.
